The essence of this video is built around the parallel created between the characters’ real world and the metaphor of their emotional world. The latter is a digital construct that works so effectively because of the post work done on the project. The choice to turn the outdoor scenes shot during daylight hours into a bleak night scene creates the requisite mood. The use of green screen allows Timberlake’s character to appear to be dragged through the dirt allows the audience to see a literal manifestation of the character’s emotional state. Without these elements, the video would lack much of its visual complexity and thematic undertones.
